We are aiming to realize the following 2 projects for the year 2008. 1. Neonatal respiratory care Academisch Ziekenhuis Paramaribo Suriname 2. Training for specialized diabetes nurses (November 2008) Suriname is a developing country in South America with a population of almost half a million. The Academic hospital Paramaribo (AZP) is the largest hospital of the country and also serves as a tertiary centre. The neonatal department admitted 257 patients in 2006 of which 75 % needed respiratory care for varying severities of respiratory distress. The most common reason for respiratory distress is premature delivery. The only form of respiratory care currently given is 100% oxygen low flow. Current challenge: Many sick babies in respiratory distress require more respiratory care than can currently be given, leading to (in our opinion) too many unnecessary deaths and (brain) damage. Giving to high concentrations of oxygen can cause permanent damage, especially to the eyes of premature infants. End result of the project: Sick babies, in need of respiratory care, receive the support they need to prevent death and morbidity. The project should be completely implemented by September 2008. Means to achieve the desired results: 1. Ordering and installing of 4 CPAP systems, 5 monitors, 2 suction pumps and 3 ventilator machines, based on previous experience and positive results. 2. Training for physicians and nurses. 3. Evaluation and monitoring to maintain and update the level of care.
More detailed descriptions of the other projects will follow in due course. |
